Abstract

Pictorial communication through emojis has become a central part of digital communication, serving as an alternative to verbal communication and a new form of non-verbal interaction. One of the latest forms of these emojis is Bitmoji, available on various social media platforms and digital applications such as iOS, Snapchat, Instagram, and others. The main objective of this study is to examine the uses of Bitmoji and attitudes toward it on social media among Saudi users. This was achieved by using the descriptive survey method with a questionnaire distributed to a sample of 131 individuals who use Bitmoji. The main findings revealed that, according to respondents, Snapchat is the platform with the highest availability of Bitmoji, with a total of 97.8%. The primary reason for using Bitmoji was for fun and entertainment, at a rate of 66.5%, followed by emotional expression at 59.6%, and, in third place, communication with friends at 40.8%. Additionally, 67.2% of respondents believed that Bitmoji somewhat represents facial features, while 82.5% had no reservations or concerns regarding its use. Among the participants, 50.4% did not believe that using Bitmoji could be considered prohibited, and 55.7% felt that Bitmoji use is permissible for children. However, 45.8% considered Bitmoji as deceptive or fake in representing facial features, while 43.5% of the study sample suggested that Bitmoji could potentially be used in cyber harassment (with the answer “maybe”), and 52.7% felt it could be used in cyberbullying. The study recommends further exploration of Bitmoji studies by focusing on the cultural and social meanings and interpretations, examining its diverse applications in various fields, and developing initiatives for users across different educational levels and age groups.
