The Duality of Compatibility and Conflict in the Formation of Psychological Character in Cinematic Film

Abstract

The cinematic character is one of the priorities of the film industry, which is a means of developing and transforming characters in the context of complex conflicts. Accordingly, the characters face numerous crises that cause unexpected transformations and reactions that conflict with society through the emergence of new internal and external conflicts. It leads to a shift in the character's behavior, resulting in the formation of a psychological personality characterized by states of anxiety, recklessness, and even murder, and unpredictable behavior due to adopting methods of confrontation and adaptation that oscillate between love and hate, or between failure and success, resulting from the paradox that appears in the contradiction between the character's thoughts, feelings, or actions. The character may desire one thing and behave in the opposite way, which creates internal tension. In psychology, many diverse readings have emerged to study psychological personalities, led by the psychologist Sigmund Freud, and they were presented in cinema as characters who carry psychological problems, including depression, anxiety, frustration, and many psychological complexes Examples of these characters are the character of (Nina) as an ideal, beloved character represented by a white swan in comparison to her rebellious character as a black swan in the movie Black Swan, and the character of (Hannibal Lecter) who has a high culture and is a terrifying killer in the movie The Silence of the Lambs, in addition to (Norman) and the personality disorder and schizophrenia who moves between his calm and peaceful character and his real character as a killer in the movie (Psycho)... etc. These films depict characters with multiple psychological dimensions and motivations due to various societal influences. Through them, they call for psychological reinforcement and support for others and reveal the challenges that individuals face in their social environments. The research problem was represented in the following question: What are the variables caused by the duality of the compatible and the conflicting in the psychological character in the film? The research included three chapters. The first chapter (the research problem, research objectives, research importance, and definition of the term.
