The Contributions of Female Companions to Public Life in the First Century AH

Abstract

Female Companions of the Prophet (may God be pleased with her) contributed significantly to public life in the first century AH. Society was in dire need of such contributions, which encompassed various aspects of public life. Umm Salamah was one of the female Companions who played a prominent and influential role. She emphasized the Islamic educational approach, applying it in both word and deed to raise awareness within the community and encourage mutual support. The Holy Quran and the purified Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) established the foundations upon which the pillars of Islamic society are built. Umm Salamah worked to clarify the paths through which happiness could be achieved for the community. Her social ideas and behaviors remain relevant in contemporary societies, indicating their universality and enduring relevance. Lady Hind played a prominent and important role in public life by disseminating the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), especially those concerning women, interpreting them, and teaching them to believing women. Foremost among her contributions was her scholarly and jurisprudential contribution. Lady Hind was deeply interested in knowledge and jurisprudence, and her long life with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made her an important source for many events and occurrences, as well as a source of Islamic legal knowledge, particularly regarding women's affairs. Her narrations were distinguished by their accuracy and understanding of the underlying principles of rulings. Consequently, many scholars relied on her hadiths, especially in the chapters on purification, prayer, fasting, pilgrimage, divorce, breastfeeding, the waiting period after divorce, and other aspects of Islamic jurisprudence. Her contribution to preserving the Prophet's sayings (Hadith) is significant, as she is considered one of the most prominent female companions in terms of transmission and authenticity. She narrated 378 hadiths from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), making her narrations important sources relied upon by hadith scholars and jurists.
