This study aimed to analyze the phenomenon of sharing visual content related to social occasions through digital platforms, and to examine its impact on individuals’ privacy in Saudi society. It also sought to explore individuals’ perceptions and their level of awareness of laws and regulations related to privacy protection. The study adopted a descriptive survey approach, using two questionnaires (perceptions and impact) and an awareness test (40 items) developed in accordance with the Personal Data Protection Law and the Anti-Cybercrime Law. The study was applied to a sample of 336 participants. The results indicated a high level of individuals’ perceptions regarding visual content sharing, along with clear awareness of the importance of obtaining prior consent and the risks associated with reposting. No statistically significant differences were found in these perceptions across most variables. The findings also showed that the impact of content sharing on privacy was high, particularly in relation to unwanted exposure and loss of control over shared content. No significant differences were found based on demographic variables, except for participation level, which was associated with a higher perception of harm.Regarding regulatory awareness, the results revealed a moderate level, with statistically significant differences in favor of females and individuals with postgraduate education, while no significant differences were found based on age or level of platform usage.Overall, the findings suggest that visual content sharing is no longer a spontaneous behavior, but rather a conscious social practice shaped by privacy considerations and cultural context. However, a gap remains between general awareness and detailed legal knowledge. The study highlights the importance of enhancing legal awareness and promoting responsible digital practices to better protect individuals’ privacy in the digital environment.
